Demystifying Fall Protection: Learn Your ABCs (and More)

The ABC’s of Fall Protection

These five elements form the foundation of any effective fall protection system:

  • A – Anchorage
    A secure point of attachment to a structure. Whether temporary or permanent anchors, it must meet strict strength standards.
  • B – Body Support
    A full body harness that distributes forces safely in the event of a fall. It must be correctly fitted, inspected, and certified for use.
  • C – Connectors
    Devices like lanyards or self-retracting lifelines that link the harness to the anchor. These help absorb shock and reduce the risk of injury.
  • D – Descent & Rescue
    If a fall occurs, you need a safe way to recover the worker — fast. Descent and rescue gear ensures no one is left hanging.
  • E – Education
    Training is essential. From interactive product training at your site, to online courses, education empowers workers to stay safe and compliant.

Why It Matters

Risk assessment to guarantee workers' safety is vital, especially in work that involves fall risks from different heights. The law obliges all companies to comply with very strict legal requirements in terms of fall protection.

In 2017 alone, 32 workers across Australia and New Zealand lost their lives due to falls from height. These tragedies are avoidable — and many stem from poor planning, lack of equipment, or inadequate training.
